India vs China: cooperation or competition?
Chinese-Indian bilateral relationship seems to be moving on firm footing. With India’s strong on software and soft-tech skills (customer service, etc) and China on hardware, can their competences in information technology be called complementary?
Deccan Herald: “The raft of agreements reached during the visit of China’s prime minister, Wen Jiabao, has put the Chinese-Indian bilateral relationship on a firm footing. The Chinese have called for a five-year plan for comprehensive cooperation in economy and trade. The prime minister drew attention to the complementary quality of India’s and China’s achievements in information technology. India’s strength is in software and China’s in hardware. Opponents of closer Chinese-Indian ties warn that cooperation is not possible as the two countries are rivals. The rivalry is likely to increase, they warn, as the two compete for global status. While it is true that competition will define India’s relations with China, the two countries can prevent this from acquiring hostile dimensions. Charting joint strategies in responding to global issues, too, should be explored”.
