The brouhaha over female-led-prayers

Category:Politics/Current affairs Jun 11th, 2005 1:00am

The program “Muslim Chronicle” had an interesting episode on female-led-prayers in Islam, quite the controversial issue today.
Thoughtus profoundis (hey, the dictionary can only do so much. Sometimes, I gotta make up terms as needed): Women leading prayer is not so much about the physical issue of the mosque/carpeting/space or the “rebellious” issue of the women leading prayer (which, by the way is not expressed as a sin anywhere in the Quran as acknowledged by the host and speaker). Rather, it is about the desire of women to be a part of the solution to the different problems plaguing the Islamic community as a whole (be it negative media, extremism, social injustices, etc). However, the only way women can fully contribute towards the solution is by being equal, non-repressed partners in the 1st place.
