Gotta love digital archives
Today I went to the Getty. So did my roomies, separately. I visited from my chair, they went by car. Comparing experiences: I got to see & savour the entire collections of object d’art, from furniture to manuscripts & previews of current exhibitions. They got to see current exhibitions only as a lot of the collection is not necessarily available on display. My armchair visit also enabled me to view objects without time limits & to save shots of anything particularly interesting.
Given my recent antique virus and natural hoarding/archivist bent, I was more concerned about being able to view various objects clearly in detail from different angles. …Kinda like peeking into someone else’s pantry or bathroom cabinet, but with more time to spare. Thus when I physically visit the museum, I’ll probably focus more on the architecture and surroundings because I’ve already dealt with the actual content.
Online archives also mean not having to to worry about whether cameras are allowed in the physical branch or worrying about taking good pictures. So if on vacation, one can reserve picture-taking for random/unique sightings.
